Things To Do

The House at Temple Sowerby, one of Cumbria’s finest small hotels offers luxury accommodation in the heart of the Eden Valley, North Lakes.  It’s been awarded the prestigious AA Three Silver Stars, together with Two Rosettes for the quality and creativity of the food presented by Head Chef Jack Bradley.

The House combines the traditional comforts of a 17th Century country house together with contemporary features.  The Restaurant at Temple Sowerby sits in a circular conservatory overlooking the walled garden and pond.

As a Penrith Hotel, we are close to the Lake District National Park and Temple Sowerby is a lovely old village in the heart of Cumbria’s Eden Valley, recently described as ‘Britain’s loveliest Valley’.

The Eden Valley is a paradise for walkers with the Pennine Way and Coast to Coast (C2C) National Trails close by. The mighty Cross Fell mountain (893m) dominates our skyline, which is the highest point on the Pennine Way. Or perhaps a scale up the mountains of the Lakes with Blencathra (845m) and Helvellyn (950m) nearby. The latter nominated the number 1 walk on Britain’s Favourite Walks: Top 100 with Julia Bradbury on ITV in January 2018. You might even try the famous Settle-Carlisle Railway and walk from the stations on the Eden Valley section of the line.

Cyclists of all abilities will find routes in and around Eden with outstanding scenery. Whether it’s around the quiet villages or challenges such as the Hartside Pass to Alston or the awesome terrain between the Eden Valley and Orton Fells, there’s a route for everyone. We are also located close to the Sea to Sea (C2C) cycle route, especially the new “Wiggos Way” loop.
Here at the House we have secure dry storage space for both cycles and walking gear and workshop facilities for those emergency repairs.
Before you set off be sure to take advantage of the infamous House breakfast including such choices as porridge, homemade granola and yoghurt, eggs benedict or the full English.

If you’re looking to host a private party or conference, then the House has a number of rooms available.  Adjacent to the Restaurant and opening out onto the terrace and garden, is the Garden Room, the perfect setting for special occasions and family celebrations.  A party of up to 24 guests can be seated at one large dining table, whilst a maximum of 40 can be accommodated if The Eden Room is also used.  Menus are planned during discussions with you taking into account the occasion and time of year. One of the Reception Rooms can be reserved privately for you to greet your guests on arrival. We are also happy to help with place cards, table plans, flowers, a cake and perhaps a few special surprises too.

We have a team dedicated to ensuring your stay is as comfortable and relaxing as possible and we look forward to welcoming you soon.
