Latest News from TSH

13th January 2012

Well, another New Year has come and gone and our 3-day House Party was thoroughly enjoyable - the rain even held off for the fireworks on New Year's Eve!

January is now a bit quieter but we have some fantastic rates to tempt you to a relaxing break to enjoy the remarkable Eden Valley. The pictures below and right were taken yesterday on a beautiful walk along the River Lyvennet, a tributary of the Eden. We were lucky enough to spot two kingfishers, as well as a hare, three buzzards and a red squirrel, not to mention the hundreds of ever-present sheep and some young calves!!

Do check out our SPECIAL RATES for January & February, and there are also our VALENTINE BREAKS to look forward to, so hope to see you soon!

15th December 2011

This picture from last January shows the wonderful landscapes to be enjoyed by walking the fells in winter! Beautiful, clear air makes for great photographs and is extremely beneficial to one's lungs!!

This year, the snows have not yet come to Temple Sowerby, although you can be sure that by January these spectacular scenes will be with us - why not take advantage of our very special January offer to explore this winter wonderland? Come and see for yourselves!

Meanwhile, we are closing for Christmas on Sunday so we wish all our guests a very Happy Christmas and a more prosperous 2012!

We look forward to welcoming you back and meeting new 'friends at TSH !

30th November 2011

As Autumn draws to a close, (a much milder and wetter one than forecast!) we look forward to the clearer skies and crisp winter days of late December and January - a beautiful time of year in the Lakes.

We have a very busy couple of weeks coming up and then we close for Christmas on 18th December for a break.

Our New Year House Party is nearly booked up, just a couple of rooms left, so call soon if you would like a wonderful New Year Break - full details here

30th September 2011

Well, a very busy September is nearly over and October is looking good too, especially with our own Wine Weekend and Painting Weekend to add to our 'normal' business!

It looks like Autumn's arriving early this year - the trees are starting to turn already and in a two or three weeks the whole countryside will be ablaze with wonderful colours! Autumn in the Lakes and Eden Valley is truly a memorable experience.

There are still a few days in October when we will have some special late-availability rates on offer, so keep an eye on our Special Offers

and make time to visit the Lakes in Autumn!

31st August 2011

The shooting season is well under way and so far the weather's been kind and our guests have enjoyed some splendid days out on the fells. We're now looking forward to September, often a great month to visit - the weather can be bright and clear and the autumnal air is invigorating!

We have a very busy month coming up, but we do have space at certain times, so do call to check - it doesn't always appear on the online booking system.

October brings our next Wine Weekend, which is now fully booked, but if you want something a bit different, try our Painting Weekend at the end of October and learn, or develop your artistic skills!

Ash will be introducing a new menu over the next week, sure to feature more garden produce - blackberries, apples, damsons and pears.

PAINTING WEEKEND | NEW YEAR | GREAT DAYS OUT

9th August 2011

Sorry, it's been a while - lot's of things happening!

Can't believe it's the Glorious 12th on Friday! Time marches on and we're coming into one of our busiest times of the year. Lots of shooting parties to look after. We still have availability though, so take advantage of late summer sunshine to explore the Eden Valley - always peaceful and rewarding, even when the Lakes are full of holidaymakers.

Our resident mallards are almost ready to fly off into the sunset - another week or so and they'll be gone. We'll miss them!

Ash's summer menu is proving a big hit and herbs, fruit and edible flowers from the garden give him great scope for his talents!

Do check out our Late Availability page for special offers - we also have dates for our next Painting Weekend in October.

Looking ahead, if you've always wanted a relaxing and sociable New Year Break, now's your chance! We have a couple of rooms left for the forthcoming celebrations, details on our New Year page.

15th July 2011

More wildfowl news!

The ducklings are now 5 weeks old and although numbers are down to eight, sadly, the survivors are thriving. We also don't think the mother is Mimi! She acts differently and is not quite so attentive. We're calling her Milly and she could be one of Mimi's daughters who remembered where she was raised?

Not content with raising ducks, we're now nursemaid to a family of partridges!! 3 days ago, a guest spotted some tiny chicks (even smaller than new-born duck chicks) and investigations discovered a mum with 6 little ones, pictured right. They're very secretive and shy so we don't see much of them, but they seem to be doing OK.... we'll keep you informed!

Now is a great time to visit - lots of gardens open and at their best, and just sitting in the garden with a glass of something chilled is idyllic! Do come and try the TSH experience!

11th June 2011

Hot news! The ducks are back in town. Came down yesterday morning to find that Mimi the Mallard had produced 12 chicks for the second year running. These are wild birds and she obviously likes the walled garden, being relatively safe from predators - although they do cost us a fortune in wild bird seed! Last year, eleven chicks survived and fledged to fly off into the sunset to the River Eden, a short distance away.

Sadly, one of the chicks was lost on the first night, probably to an owl, but we still have eleven, so let's hope they all make it.

Our next WINE WEEKEND will be on 7th - 9th October and the theme is Exploring Bordeaux. See details at our dedicated page or call for a leaflet. Do book early, these are always very popular weekends!

21st May 2011

As promised, the croquet hoops are now out and that makes for a very summery feel to the garden! Many of the flowers are producing early blooms and the garden is tranquil oasis of calm - except for the Swifts, which have returned, screaming round the garden and giving fantastic flying displays! A wonderful sight.

Our latest menu is proving a hit, with more herbs now available from our herb garden and the elderflowers won't be long now either.

A memorable time of year altogether and we have special rates to tempt you - just visit our Late Availability section.

There's still time to book for our PAINTING WEEKEND in July, too.

26th April 2011

Wonderful weather, the Lakes are looking spectacular and we've found a gardener! What more could one want? Sadly though, the mallard we found sitting on her eggs in the garden has flown, abandoning 10 eggs - what a shame! Never mind, there's still plenty of time for Mimi, or one of her daughters, to try again. It was such fun having eleven chicks running around last year!

I've been extending the pond and establishing a new waterfall, so hopefully that will be finished before too long. Although some of our shrubs succumbed to the harsh winter, all the perennials are thriving and the next few weeks will be full of colour - time to get the croquet hoops out!

There's still time to book for our PAINTING WEEKEND in July - some of our participants are complete beginners, so if you've ever wanted to 'dabble' in watercolours, now's your chance!

4th April 2011

Spring has well and truly sprung! Daffodils everywhere, blossom appearing and even some gorgeous spring sunshine, heralding better times ahead!

Now is the perfect time for a break at TSH - see our late availability page for extra-special rates, or why not come for Easter?

Ash has just created another new menu for the following month - some great new dishes including tandoori-spiced quail and fell-bred lamb and beef. Don't miss out!

21st February 2011

Well, Valentine's has gone for another year and thanks to all the romantic souls who enjoyed one of our wonderful evenings last weekend.

Spring is now in the air.....no, honestly! Snowdrops are blooming, bulbs are springing up all over and the daffodils will be upon us before you can say 'I wandered lonely as a cloud....'

A great time, then, for a short break to TSH. We are offering some amazing, extra-special, deals if you can come before the end of March - have a look!

We still have places left for the next WINE WEEKEND in March, and we also have a brand new feature weekend to tempt you....

PAINTING WEEKENDS at TSH. Local artist John Sibson will host the weekend and it's a must if you want to learn or improve your painting skills in the perfect environment.

13th February 2011

Valentine's and Wine!

Valentine's weekend is in full swing - full restaurant last night and again for tomorrow night, Valentine's Evening itself. Just shows how many romantic souls there are out there!

The next special event is our 'Taste Evening' on 17th March, followed immediately by latest Wine Weekend.

Both have a Mediterranean theme. The taste evening, for non-resident guests, features a 5-course tasting menu with selected wines for £60.00 per person. Accommodation can be booked at preferential rates for those wishing to avoid driving home!

Our Wine Weekend offers a whole weekend given to the enjoyment of good food and wine, including a tutored wine tasting, hosted by Neil Goldie of House of Townend Wines, a highly knowledgeable fellow who effortlessly brings a blend of learning and fun into the occasion!

Stunning Snowdrops at TSH

Our snowdrop field is on the verge of blossoming and in a couple of weeks will begin its marvellous show, carpeting the woodland floor amidst the copper of the beech leaves - what a glorious sight.

February is a great time to visit the Lakes in general and TSH in particular. As well as our own display of snowdrops, Dalemain Mansion nearby is renowned for theirs, too and the gardens are open to be enjoyed by all - they also have a marmalade festival on 12-13 February, coinciding with our Valentines Weekend break. What more excuse do you need?
